Relax.

I actually feel better after watching the President meeting the press. Because, he was perfectly clear about his position on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. He went well beyond his usual monosyllabic explanatory recitals. He dispensed with legalistic pronouncements and went straight to the heart of his decision-making process:

"We passed that in 19-78! And this is 2000-6!"
Like, isn't it obvious how out of date it must be? With arguments like this, well, what more is there to say? The President provided encouragement to all sides of this argument.

But the other thing I realized, watching Mr. Bush, is that this is the United States of America, est. 1776, which has thrived through war, scandal, and stupidity for over 225 years, under a Constitution adopted in 17-89! George Bush, Dick Cheney, and Karl Rove are not demons. They're patriotic, well-meaning fellow Americans who want the best for our country. If we've lived through Benedict Arnold, and Aaron Burr, Warren Harding, Joseph McCarthy, Richard Nixon and Spiro T. Agnew, and, yes, even Bill Clinton, we can handle them, too.
